The Agency

Vikings of Brazil was founded to promote literature originally written in Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish. We act as agents or sub-agents for many of the biggest publishers and literary agencies from all five Nordic countries, as well as some non-Nordic publishers, for example from the US, UK and India. In a short period of time we have multiplied the number of Nordic books being sold to and published in Brazil. In the first 3 active years (2012-2014) alone we sold over 200 titles. We work with all genres and have successfully sold numerous fiction, non-fiction and children’s titles.

Huge Potential:

There are over 500 publishers in Brazil and over 370.000.000 books are sold in Brazil every year. The bi-annual book fair in São Paulo, the Bienal do Livro, is the second largest book fair in the world, and the publishing market is worth over US$ 2bn (Source: FIPE). Moreover, the market is still growing; in 2010 the Brazilian bookstore sector grew by 9,6% (See). With strong national campaigns to improve literacy in this fifth most populous country in the world, it is expected that the growth in the publishing industry will continue for years to come. Many Nordic authors are already internationally successful, so why not in Brazil?

Promoting Nordic Literature:

It is entirely typical that in the list of top 10 best-selling books in Brazil there are no national authors at all, the bestselling books are often all translated works (See). Yet, while millions of books originally written in English and French, for example, are being sold in Brazil every year, to date only a few Nordic authors have been successful here due to 1) lack of information, 2) lack of contacts, and 3) difficulty of finding translators. Vikings of Brazil provides solutions to all these issues:

  1. We provide information and news about Nordic literature to the Brazilian publishers through various media (newsletters, website, Twitter, Facebook etc.). We also arrange special events and attend national and international book fairs to promote individual authors and Nordic literature in general;
  2. We have the necessary contacts and skills needed to negotiate the best possible deals with the right Brazilian publishers on behalf of Nordic authors and rights holders. We also provide all the necessary help in post-sale issues, which can be difficult if you are based abroad and don’t speak Portuguese;
  3. We offer translation services and/or help the Brazilian publishers look for a suitable translator.

With the three above mentioned problems solved by the Vikings of Brazil, Nordic publishers are presented with an excellent opportunity to sell the foreign rights of their books in the huge Brazilian market.

Brazilian literature:

In addition to promoting Nordic literature in Brazil, we also offer help for Nordic publishers interested in Brazilian literature. Interest in Brazilian literature is steadily growing worldwide. For example, at the 2010 Frankfurt Book fair, Brazilian publishers sold foreign rights for over US$ 550.000 (See). Moreover, Brazilian literature was the Guest of Honor at the 2013 Frankfurt Book Fair, and in 2014 it was the theme of the Gothemburg Book Fair. The Brazilian government has recently increased its translation grant program (See).
